Time Well Invested

At Woodward Financial Advisors, our core focus is Helping People Get the Most Life Out of Their Money. While that often involves conversations about investments, taxes, retirement, and estate planning, the real purpose behind them is much bigger. Money is not the end goal. Instead, it is a tool that can provide freedom, flexibility, and more opportunities to spend your time in ways that matter to you.

We explain our value we proposition through what we call the Four Cs: Competence, Coaching, Continuity, and Convenience.

Each of these plays an important role in the work we do, but lately I have been thinking more about convenience. More specifically, I have been thinking about the value of time.

Unlike money, time is a resource we cannot replenish. We may be able to earn more money, rebuild our savings, or recover from an investment setback, but none of us can earn another Saturday afternoon or add a few extra hours to a busy week. Apparently, no amount of financial planning has figured out how to compound time!

This has caused me to take a closer look at how I spend my own time. I have been asking myself whether certain responsibilities are ones I genuinely enjoy doing or simply tasks I continue to handle because I am capable of doing them.

For example, I have been considering hiring someone to help clean my home. My first thought was probably the same one many people have: I can clean my own house. And that is certainly true. But the better question may be: Is that how I want to spend several hours of my weekend?

Of course, outsourcing is not automatically the right answer. Some people genuinely enjoy cleaning their homes, cooking their meals, and maintaining their lawns. Those activities can be rewarding and meaningful. Others find those same tasks draining and would rather spend that time with family, reading a good book, or simply relaxing after a busy week. If an activity brings you joy or satisfaction, it is an excellent use of your time.

The goal is not to avoid every chore or inconvenience. The goal is to be intentional about where your time goes.

This is one of the ways we provide convenience to our clients. Financial planning requires much more than selecting a few investments. It involves building and monitoring a solid financial plan, understanding ever-changing tax and estate laws, monitoring risk, coordinating with attorneys and accountants, evaluating insurance coverage, and staying disciplined during periods of market volatility.

Some of our clients are capable of handling these responsibilities themselves. However, capability and desire are two different things. By helping manage and coordinate these areas, we aim to give our clients back some of their time while also providing confidence that the details of their financial lives are thoughtfully addressed.

Sometimes getting the most life out of your money means paying for convenience, whether that is hiring a housekeeper, using a meal service, working with a financial advisor, or finding another way to remove a task that drains your time and energy.

The next time you are deciding whether to handle something yourself, consider asking: Do I enjoy doing this? Is my time better spent somewhere else? Could my money be used to create more time for the people and activities I value most? Am I willing to trade dollars for time?

After all, the purpose of building wealth is not simply to watch the numbers grow. It is to use those resources to create a life you truly enjoy living.
